2006 Annual Meeting Resolutions
At the SRNA Annual Meeting held in Regina, May 3, 2006, five resolutions were presented to Council and the Membership for discussion. All of them were passed by the membership.
1. Be it resolved that the SRNA ask for an apology from a Rawlco Radio talk show host for derogatory comments made about RNs in Saskatchewan.
2. Be it resolved that given the uniqueness and the evolving nature of the RN(NP) role, by the next SRNA AGM, the SRNA set up a formal collaborative process with Nurse Practitioners of Saskatchewan (NPOS) to ensure RN(NP) representation with regards to issues that impact RN(NP) practice.
3. Be it resolved that the SRNA develop strategies and take action to strengthen an understanding among nurses, the public and other partners and stakeholders of the concepts and actions related to the systems approach to patient safety with respect to errors, near misses and adverse events (such as sharp end/blunt end analysis and incident resolutions) through:
- Ensuring these concepts are included in the new SRNA and national RN standards and foundation competencies for the practice of registered nursing,
- Ensuring that these concepts and related competencies are required for basic and continuing nursing education curricula and programs,
- Working with educational institutions, CPSI (Canadian Patient Safety Institute), governments, employers and colleagues in practice, education, administration and policy to advance the systems approach to patient safety with the patient and public as partners,
- Continuing to identify what works from a system perspective and what needs improvements.
4. Be it resolved that the SRnA work with the government, the regional health authorities and the unions for establishing patient to RN ratios based on best practice.
5. Be it resolved that the SRNA will advocate for an increase of 150 seats in the Nursing Education Program
of Saskatchewan.
WHEREAS positive health outcomes for the people of Saskatchewan are directly affected by having adequate numbers of well qualified
RNs within the health care system and research indicates that current graduation rates will not meet future demand;
WHEREAS the SRNA supports baccalaureate as entry to practice as being necessary to achieve entry level competencies for RNs;
WHEREAS the NEPS, a collaborative program between the SIAST Nursing Division, the U of S College of Nursing and the First Nations
University of Canada, is the sole baccalaureate program approved by the SRNA.
