Saskatchewan RNs celebrate their profession and plan for the future
SRNA Annual Meeting and Conference, May 5 & 6, 2004
Best Practice - Nurses Making it Happen
Saskatoon (May 5, 2004) - Members of the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses' Association (SRNA) will leave this week's annual meeting with a renewed commitment for improving the health system for nurses and the public they serve. The SRNA's 87th annual meeting, 'Best Practice - Nurses Making it Happen', will bring more than 300 RNs together from across Saskatchewan to celebrate the achievements of the past year; strategize on nursing and health issues; commit to and learn about best practice; and plan for the future of the profession. The event is being held at the Radisson Hotel in Saskatoon on May 5 and 6.
"As I reflect on my first year as president, it is the strength, dedication and perseverance of the registered nurses of this province that make me most proud," said Candace Skrapek, RN, President of the self-regulatory body for Saskatchewan's 9,000 RNs. "Together, we have created a powerful professional association dedicated to ensuring safe and competent nursing care for the people of Saskatchewan."
Skrapek is encouraging members to take an active part in this year's business meeting on the afternoon of May 5th. Recipients of SRNA Millennium Awards and Life and Honorary Memberships will be recognized at the banquet that evening. Joanne Felstrom and Betty Hailstone will receive life memberships and Roy Romanow will be presented with an honorary membership.
"Registered nurses will continue to lead on many pressing issues - such as retention and recruitment, quality work environments, patient safety, primary health care, protecting and strengthening Medicare and best practice which is the focus of this event," said Donna Brunskill, RN, Executive Director of SRNA. Featured speakers for the conference include Doris Grinspun, RN, Executive Director of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario and Chris Johnson, 'Dr.Laugh'. They will share their insights on best practice initiatives and the importance of laughter in the workplace.
"The panel on 'Emerging Infections - Best Practice Challenges' is both timely and insightful," Brunskill said. The panel will be moderated by John Gormley, host of CKOM Saskatoon and CJME Regina 'John Gormley Live'. Panelists include Dr. Mary Ferguson-Pare, RN, VP Professional Affairs and Chief Nurse Executive, University Health Network, Toronto on SARS, Dr. Eric Young, Director and Deputy Chief Medical Health Officer, Population Health Branch, Saskatchewan Health on the West Nile Virus and Dr. John Conly, Regional Clinical Head, Department of Medicine, Foothills Hospital, Calgary on Antibiotic Resistant Organisms.
The SRNA is the professional regulatory body for registered nurses in the province. Founded in 1917, the SRNA represents the largest group of health professionals in the province with almost 9,000 practising members. The SRNA speaks out on health care issues on behalf of registered nurses and the public.
