Nursing: Knowledge and Commitment at Work
National Nursing Week - May 10 to 16, 2004
Regina (May 7, 2004) - Almost 9,000 registered nurses in Saskatchewan will join their counterparts in Canada and throughout the world this week to celebrate their profession. Each year, the nursing profession is celebrated during the week of Florence Nightingale's birthday on May 12.
Donna Brunskill, RN, Executive Director of the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses' Association said the week is "The nursing profession's annual occasion to recognize and honour the profession's achievements and to educate the public about the many significant contributions nurses make to the health care system and the well-being of all Canadians."
This year, the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) has selected the theme, 'Nursing: Knowledge and Commitment at Work'. Rob Calnan, President of CNA explained, "This slogan reflects nurses' current reality. Nurses today are knowledge workers who are dealing with increasingly complex cases and issues in the workplace. The theme highlights the important role that Canada's nurses play in the country's health care system."
Brunskill concluded, "We are proud of our Saskatchewan nurses for their dedication and commitment to evolve to meet the changing needs of patients and clients. Across the health care spectrum, every nurse has a role to play in ensuring that a strong and dynamic nursing work force is maintained, and in advancing a not-for-profit, publicly funded health care system that is accessible, responsive and accountable."
The SRNA is the professional regulatory body for registered nurses in the province. Founded in 1917, the SRNA represents the largest group of health professionals in the province with almost 9,000 practising members. The SRNA speaks out on health care issues on behalf of registered nurses and the public.
