SRNA supports Tobacco Control Legislation

Regina, Sask. (May 13, 2004) - The SRNA applauds the provincial government for introducing The Tobacco Control Amendment Act that will prohibit smoking in all public places in Saskatchewan by January 2005. The Saskatchewan Registered Nurses' Association (SRNA) has long participated on the Saskatchewan Coalition for Tobacco Reduction. It is healthy public policy which forms the foundation of healthy communities.

The SRNA supports Health Minister John Nilson's comment, "Becoming a smoke-free province is an important public health step and not an attack on businesses or communities."

"It is common knowledge that smoking is detrimental to one's health. Smoke, either first or second hand, is directly linked to the incidence of heart disease and cancer as well as other illnesses," says Candace Skrapek, RN, SRNA President.

Donna Brunskill, RN, SRNA Executive Director commented, "This act of leadership in healthy public policy by government will be a significant contribution to increasing the overall health of the community and will serve as a national model."

The SRNA is the professional regulatory body for registered nurses in the province. Founded in 1917, the SRNA represents the largest group of health professionals in the province with almost 9,000 practising members. The SRNA speaks out on health care issues on behalf of registered nurses and the public.
