Nursing: Patients First. Safety Always
National Nursing Week
May 9 - 15, 2005
Regina, May 6, 2005 - Almost 9,000 registered nurses in Saskatchewan will join their counterparts in Canada and throughout the world this week to celebrate their profession. Each year, the nursing profession is celebrated during the week of Florence Nightingale's birthday on May 12.
Donna Brunskill, RN, Executive Director of the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses' Association said the week is "The nursing profession's annual occasion to recognize and honour the profession's achievements and to educate the public about the many significant contributions nurses make to the health care system and the well-being of all Canadians."
This year, the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) has selected the theme, "Nursing: Patients First. Safety Always." The 2005 theme reflects an important and growing issue. It emphasizes the significance of patient safety to nurses and the larger health care community.
Brunskill concluded, "We are proud of our Saskatchewan nurses for their dedication and commitment. Across the health care spectrum, registered nurses, who have the greatest amount of patient contact are in an excellent position to strengthen patient safety."
The SRNA is the professional regulatory body for registered nurses in the province. Founded in 1917, the SRNA represents the largest group of health professionals in the province with almost 9,000 practising members. The SRNA speaks out on health care issues on behalf of registered nurses and the public.
