SRNA Recognizes Nursing Excellence

SRNA Annual Meeting, Regina (May 2, 2006) - The Saskatchewan Registered Nurses' Association (SRNA) pays tribute to the outstanding achievements of registered nurse members and nursing students at the Association's annual awards ceremony this evening. Nine SRNA Millennium Awards and one Life Membership will be presented. "The SRNA is proud to showcase the exceptional contribution these recipients have made to the health, the nursing profession and the public we serve" said Fay Puckett, RN, President of the SRNA. "Their accomplishments have had a significant impact in the lives of individuals, families and communities."

"They embody compassion, caring and skill and a relentless pursuit of knowledge to ensure patient safety" said Puckett. "They are leaders in their increasingly diverse roles within our constantly evolving health care system." The Millennium Awards were established in 2000 by the SRNA to recognize nurses and/or members of the public who have made an outstanding impact in nursing practice and/or in the health environment. The purpose of the awards is to acknowledge individuals or groups who have made a difference.

The 2006 recipient of the prestigious SRNA Life Membership is Alice Tataryn from Christopher Lake, who is retired from nursing and is dedicated to community service.

The 2006 recipients of the Millennium Awards, named after SRNA founding members are:

Jean Browne Award for Nursing Leadership
Genevieve Silvernagle, RN (Biggar)

Nora Armstrong Award for Health Advocacy
Trudy Bews, RN (Eatonia)

Granger Campbell Award for Clinical Excellence
Pamela Johnson, RN (Regina)

Ruth Hicks Award for Student Leadership
Gail Deneschuk (Saskatoon)
Peggy Lumberjack (Regina)

Effie Feeny Award for Nursing Research
'Living with Hope' Research Team (Saskatoon)

Elizabeth Van Valkenburg Award for Leadership in Nursing Education
Dr. Sandra Bassendowski, RN (Regina)
Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology (SIAST) Nursing Division.

The awards will be presented at the SRNA Annual Awards banquet this evening at the Ramada Hotel in Regina.

The SRNA is the professional regulatory body for registered nurses in the province. Founded in 1917, the SRNA represents the largest group of health professionals in the province with almost 9,000 practising members. The SRNA speaks out on health care issues on behalf of registered nurses and the public.
