Launch of Traditions and Transitions
SRNA to launch a new book, Traditions and Transitions - A Photographic History of Nursing in Saskatchewan by Sandra Bassendowski, RN
Regina, (May 1, 2006) The Saskatchewan Registered Nurses' Association is delighted to announce the launch of a passionate and inspiring new book Traditions and Transitions - A Photographic History of Nursing in Saskatchewan by Dr. Sandra Bassendowski, RN. The official launch will take place at 7:45 pm at the Ramada Inn in Regina, May 2, 2006 as part of the Association's annual Registered Nurse Recognition Ceremony.
The images and the photos in this book convey the history of nursing in Saskatchewan. "The photographs reflect people, events, places and experiences from a moment in time in nursing's past," Bassendowski explains. "I believe it is important to have an historical awareness of our past so that we can examine the issues that face us today. We have a great deal to learn from the thousands of RNs who have provided safe, competent care to the people of Saskatchewan."
The book represents a compilation of historical facts, nursing stories, original sketches and stunning photographs depicting nursing in Saskatchewan as never seen before. The photographs and stories in this book serve as a bridge between nursing's past and nursing's present.
"This photographic history book of nursing is a first for the SRNA," said Donna Brunskill, RN, SRNA Executive Director. "It was a project of some magnitude for our organization and I am proud and delighted with the outcome." Regina-based author Bassendowski received the commission for developing a book to celebrate 100 years of nursing in the province. The project was funded in part by a Saskatchewan Centennial 2005 grant. The book printed by Saskatoon based Houghton Boston is available for a cost of $25 per book. As part of the launch strategy Bassendowski will lead a book signing tour during Nursing Week in Moose Jaw, Regina and Saskatoon. Details on the tour are on our website www.srna.org.
The SRNA is the professional regulatory body for registered nurses in the province. Founded in 1917, the SRNA represents the largest group of health professionals in the province with almost 9,000 practising members.
