National Nursing Week
Think You Know Nursing? Take a Closer Look.
May 7 to 13, 2007
Regina, May 4, 2007 - Almost 9,000 registered nurses in Saskatchewan will join their counterparts in Canada and throughout the world this week to celebrate their profession. Each year, the nursing profession is celebrated during the week of Florence Nightingale's birthday on May 12.
Donna Brunskill, RN, Executive Director of the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses' Association said the week is "the nursing profession's annual occasion to recognize and honour the profession's achievements and to educate the public about the many significant contributions nurses make to the health care system and the well-being of all Canadians."
This year, the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) has selected the theme, "Think You Know Nursing? Take a Closer Look." The 2007 theme reflects the important roles that registered nurses fulfill as health care leaders, researchers, and quality care providers. Registered nurses provide front line services to the newborn and the elderly, to communities facing waves of communicable disease, to those caught in armed or political conflict. We are partners with the Canadian military and partners with new technology and innovation in health care. Brunskill said "Registered nurses are improving the health of the citizens of Saskatchewan by charting the course for a stronger and more vibrant health system for all."
"I have met many inspirational nurses from Saskatchewan practicing in a variety of roles, who have made a difference every day," said Brunskill. "They are vital to our health system and lead the way in optimizing the health of the citizens of Saskatchewan. It's about preventing illness and keeping the public healthy."
Brunskill concluded, "We are proud of our Saskatchewan registered nurses for their dedication and commitment. We encourage you to take a closer look at nursing."
The SRNA is the professional regulatory body for registered nurses in the province. Founded in 1917, the SRNA represents the largest group of health professionals in the province with almost 9,000 practising members. The SRNA speaks out on health care issues on behalf of registered nurses and the public. This year the SRNA celebrates 90 years of service to the people of Saskatchewan.
