Gladys's father, Reverend John Richard Matheson was a contractor before he became a missionary for the Anglican Church and was assigned to serve at St.Barnabas Mission in Onion Lake, Saskatchewan, which were the North West Territories at the time. Gladys would inherit her father's patience, nurturance, and sense of giving unto others.
