The Story Behind The Statue

World War I Nursing Sister Gladys Elizabeth (Matheson) Crim

Gladys Matheson Class of 1917, Winnipeg General Hospital

Gladys was passionate about finishing her nurse's training, and after much convincing, her father took her to Winnipeg in January of 1914 to finish it at the Winnipeg General Hospital. Both her father and fiancé died in 1916, while she was away, and this was a difficult time for Gladys. She managed to continue on with her education, and graduated in May of 1917. Much of her determination to carry on, came from her strong intention to enlist in the military service as a Nursing Sister.
