Practice Advisement

Our practice advisors are available for consultation on professional practice issues. This confidential service is designed to enhance and promote safe, ethical and competent practice. You might consult with us about:

• information about the services and the mandate of the Association
• advice and guidance to:
  • address identified problems
  • identify/clarify issues to determine the problem
  • identify how client care could be affected
  • document and communicate concerns to appropriate persons
  • negotiate resolution and implement changes in practice to meet standards
• resources
• support and encouragement
• referral

You can discuss your issue over the phone or request a fact-to-face meeting with a Practice Advisor. The advisor will help you clarify what should be addressed and suggest resources that you could use in resolving your issue. If your issue is not within the mandate of the SRNA, we will refer you to other resources.

PRINCIPLES/BELIEFS/VALUES

The major principles, beliefs and values which guide the operation of the Nursing Practice Team are:

1. The protection of the public is the primary principle and objective for the Practice of Nursing Team.
2. Standards and Foundation Competencies for the Practice of Registered Nurses (Effective Year 2007) define and describe the acceptable level of practice required of all nurses in all domains of nursing practice.
3. Other SRNA documents further define and describe how the Standards and Foundation Competencies for the Practice of Registered Nurses (Effective Year 2007) are operationalized in all domains of nursing practice.
4. A nurse who is not meeting nursing practice standards may jeopardize client care.
5. The nurse who is not meeting practice standards should be given the opportunity to seek and receive professional support, advice, information and resources which will assist him or her to do so.
6. The provision of support, advice, information and resources assists nurses to meet practice standards, promotes good nursing practice and prevents poor nursing practice.
7. Advice, information and resources which are provided to nurses and others who use the service must be appropriate, accurate and complete.
8. Problems that nurses experience in meeting standards are frequently impacted and complicated by the context within which nurse work.
9. The Nursing Practice Advisors are nurses with extensive experience who have the necessary competence and access to resources to provide support, advice and information, and identify resources that may be required by nurses in order to meet standards.
10. All consultations are confidential within the Nursing Practice Team.
