To practise nursing in Saskatchewan, you must be registered and licenced to practise registered nursing with the SRNA. Only if you have a licence to practise nursing can you call yourself, or be employed as , a "nurse", "registered nurse", "graduate nurse", "registered nurse (nurse practitioner)", or "registered nurse (graduate nurse practitioner)".
If you have/will graduate with a degree in nursing in another Canadian province/territory and are registered to write the CRNE or Quebec Order of RN (OIIQ), and wish to work as a Graduate Nurse in SK before receiving your exam result, download and complete this Application Package.
Applications will remain valid for one year from the date of the last contact by the applicant. Last contact shall be defined as the provision of documentation/information to support the application process. Regulations and entry requirements are subject to bylaw and policy changes.
Once we receive all requirements and your application is approved, you will be eligible for a graduate nurse licence.
Graduate Nurse (GN) Licence
The GN licence is a temporary, four-month licence with two possible four-month extensions. You must be registered to write the CRNE or Quebec Order of RN (OIIQ) in order to be eligible for a GN licence or extension.
It is your responsibility to confirm that your GN Licence has been issued before you begin work. You and your nurse manager or employer may confirm your GN registration using our Verification Service available on the SRNA website, select the name and date of birth option. Practising without a licence is in violation of The Registered Nurses Act, 1988 and there is no liability coverage through CNPS.
SRNA will mail the licence and official receipt to you after the licence issue date.
GNs and RNs are required to participate in the Continuing Competence Program.
Once you have passed the CRNE or Quebec Order of RN (OIIQ), you are no longer eligible for a GN licence or an extension. It is your responsibility to ensure that the requirements for RN registration are received at the SRNA in time to be processed before your current Graduate Nurse Licence expires. If your GN Licence expires before you are registered as a RN in Saskatchewan, it is your responsibility to notify your employer that you will not be able to work until you have obtained your Saskatchewan RN licence.
The SRNA recommends that you obtain your Initial RN Registration with the regulatory body in the jurisdiction where you obtained your degree in nursing; as this option will not affect your future mobility outside of Canada.
If you obtain your initial registration with the SRNA, in the future if you decide to work as a nurse in another country, the licensing body of this country may not accept your original verification of licensure from the SRNA because you were educated in a different Canadian province.
