Saskatchewan Graduates: Graduate Nurse (GN) Licence PDF Print E-mail

The GN licence is a temporary, four-month licence with two possible four-month extensions. You must be scheduled to write the CRNE in order to be eligible for a GN licence or extension. Once you have passed the CRNE, the GN licence is no longer available.

To Apply for a GN Licence

Practising without a licence is in violation of The Registered Nurses Act, 1988 and there would be no liability coverage for either yourself or your employer.

We will mail a licence and receipt to you after the effective date.

If you will not be working in Saskatchewan before you pass the CRNE, you do not need to apply for a GN licence.

To Apply for an Extension of Your GN Licence

It is important to apply for the GN Licence extension before your expiry date so there is no lapse in licensure.

The following requirements must be received at SRNA no sooner than one month before your expiry date to ensure they are current at the time of extension.

First Extension:

  • Send a signed and dated letter to SRNA, including your address and phone number, requesting extension of your licence with the fee (Fee Schedule) GN Credit Card Payment Form;
  • Ask your nurse manager to send a letter directly to SRNA, signed and on letterhead, confirming they are extending your employment and that you are practising at a safe and competent level for a graduate nurse.

Second Extension:

  • Send a signed and dated letter to SRNA, including your address and phone number, requesting extension of your licence with the fee (Fee Schedule). In this letter, you must declare that you have participated and complied with the Continuing Competence Program and completed a self assessment, developed a learning plan and received peer feedback.   • Complete a Consent Form and return it to our office. We will send a questionnaire to your employer.

Scope of Practice, Graduate Nurse Membership

  • The graduate nurse member shall practise nursing under the supervision of a registered nurse.
  • Graduate nurses can work in a variety of settings, including home care, long term and acute care.
  • In areas where graduate nurses are employed, a registered nurse must be at work and available to direct the work actions or performance of the graduate nurse in a collaborative practice. Collaborative practice shall be defined as a process which involves the graduate and registered nurse working together, in each other's presence as necessary.
  • The graduate nurse shall not be certified to perform nursing procedures by transfer of medical function(s) (see: SRNA publication: "The Registered Nurse Scope of Practice: Special Nursing Procedures and Nursing Procedures by Transfer of Medical Functions, 1993" under revision).
