Top Considerations When Using Social Media

The Social Media resource created by the SRNA will help in guiding members to use their online accounts in a responsible, safe and appropriate manner, both inside and outside of the workplace. The resource was created to provide guidance in understanding the expectations for appropriate use of personal social media accounts.

Though there are risks associated with sharing content and having an online presence as an individual, social media can also be used for a variety of positive reasons, including advocacy. It is important to remember that all information posted online, remains there indefinitely where employers, clients and colleagues, present and future, can view it. The resource highlights various areas that need to be considered prior to posting information, comments or photos to an online platform. These include confidentiality, privacy, boundaries, employer policies, professional image, accountability and personal integrity.

As social media continues to grow in popularity, you are encouraged to review this document and reflect on its application to your past, present and future use of social media platforms. If you have any questions, please direct them to practiceadvice@srna.org.
