Recognition of Practice

This section is for RNs and NPs who work in nontraditional nursing roles.

What is Recognition of Practice

The Saskatchewan Registered Nurses Association (SRNA) recognizes that Registered Nurses (RN) are engaged in a multitude of roles and activities that may be non-traditional, innovative or complex. As such, it is impossible to create a list of all the roles and activities that fall within the definition of the practice of registered nursing. The SRNA has a process in place to determine if an RN’s practice falls within the definition of nursing practice contained in The Registered Nurses Act, 1988.

The Registered Nurses Act, 1988, section 2k, states that the, ’practice of registered nursing’ means the performance or co-ordination of health care services including but not limited to:

  • observing and assessing the health status of clients and planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care; and
  • the counselling, teaching, supervision, administration and research that is required to implement or complement health care services; for the purpose of promoting, maintaining or restoring health, preventing illness and alleviating suffering..."  (p. 3).

Process for Recognizing Practice

Each request for recognition of approved nursing practice is reviewed on an individual basis to determine if the roles and activities that the RN is engaged in fits the definition of nursing practice, allows the member to use the title RN and count their employment hours toward registration.

The RN must be licensed in good standing for the request to be considered. The SRNA requires the following documentation to assess an RN’s request for recognition of nursing practice:

  • Evidence of membership (or eligibility for membership) with the SRNA
  • Complete the Recognition of Practice application form for either RN or NP:
  • A written description of the position that outlines how the member’s nursing practice meets the current Registered Nurse Practice Standards and Registered Nurse Entry-Level Competencies including at least two examples to support the responses for each section.
  • A copy of the job advertisement and/or a job description if available.
  • Educational requirement(s), if applicable.
  • Copies of certificate/course completion(s), if applicable.
  • Other documentation, as requested.
  • References may be requested.

Review and Decision Process

The RN's request will be reviewed by the Registrar/Designate. The amount of time required to render a decision is impacted by the completeness and thoroughness of the documentation submitted to support the request. Prior to approval, the RN or NP practice hours worked in the position being inquired about, cannot be included to meet the requirements for registration. The member will be notified in writing of the decision.

Once the supporting documentation is reviewed, the Registrar/Designate may decide to:

  1. Approve the request and recognize the position as approved nursing practice, either partially or fully.
  2. Request additional information before deciding whether the position is approved nursing practice.
  3. Forward the request to the Registration and Membership Committee for review.
  4. Deny recognition of the position as approved nursing practice.

Regulations and entry requirements are subject to bylaw and policy changes.
